Beaufort is a small town popular with tourists. The shopping district is a few blocks along the water. There are many boats sailing the narrow waterways and fishing along the marsh islands.

A fort has stood on this spot on Beaufort Inlet since the 18th century. The current fort was built in the early 1800's in the aftermath of the War of 1812 and served as a battlesite in the Civil War.
